Christmas in Cornwall

Ryelands is located overlooking the Tamar Valley, on one side of the valley is Devon, the other Cornwall, and the valley extends north from the broad estuary at Plymouth to the intricate, deeply incised river that meanders just below Launceston and Tavistock. Ryelands B&B is positioned on the border of the two counties near to Saltash, known as the ‘Gateway to Cornwall’. The Tamar Valley borders Dartmoor National Park to the east and the Kit Hill area to the west. As many our guests state in their reviews, we really are in the perfect location!

Illuminate 2017

There’s plenty of Christmas cheer going on in and around us this winter; Mayflower 400 UK commemorates the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower sailing from Plymouth to America, carrying the pilgrims who founded the modern United States. On Friday 24th November 2017, the run-up to this significant moment in history will be commemorated with Illuminate – a light festival for Plymouth.

Plymouth will see Royal William Yard illuminated by design, art and inspiration inspired by the values of Mayflower 400; freedom, humanity, imagination and future. This four day is worth attending if you’re staying with us at Ryelands.

Saltash Christmas Festival

On 2nd December 2017, the community of Saltash will be celebrating all things Christmas by transforming Fore Street into a pedestrian haven with snow in the air and stilt walkers on the ground.  Well worth a visit to pick up a range of locally made Christmas gifts for your loved ones.

Saltash Waterside Christmas

Join our friendly local community for a great Christmas event in Saltash on 2nd December, with carols around the Christmas Tree and the Brunel Bridge all floodlit. Father Christmas will be in attendance and a spectacular of Fireworks at 6 pm!

Plymouth Christmas Market

Visit the Plymouth Christmas Market to sample an array of local produce from 30 November to 21 December. The beautiful log cabin style stalls will be selling unique hand-crafted gifts from the South West and further afield, will be festooned in fairy lights offering warming drinks, a Bavarian bar with heated seats, and festive food to keep visitors going – perfect for those chilly, late night shopping trips.

Published Author Comes to Stay!

Published Author Comes to Stay at Ryelands B&B

Here at Ryelands B&B, we love meeting our guests and learning a little more about them as we introduce them to the property and its facilities, or chat a little whilst they enjoy a leisurely breakfast! We’ve been lucky enough to have had many fabulous guests to stay since we opened in May, each with their own unique reasons for visiting this beautiful part of the world!

We were very excited, a few weeks ago, to welcome the author Leona Thomas to our Bed & Breakfast. Leona’s father, Leonard H. Thomas, served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War and kept a diary about his experiences aboard HMS Ulster Queen in the Russian Arctic Convoy. Leona has collated and edited these diaries to create ‘Through Ice and Fire: A Russian Arctic Convoy Diary 1942’ – a book that really brings to life the hardship and reality of life at sea on an anti-aircraft ship in dangerous times and inhospitable conditions.

Leona was kind enough to share a copy of her book with us, so we can confirm that ‘Through Ice and Fire’ is an incredibly poignant insight into our history, and highly recommended to anyone with an interest in the first-hand experiences of our service personnel in World War 2. If you are interested in reading Leona’s book, you can find it here.
